The Mogwai is the big brother to the Kenzie. Sharing a similar stylish retro-design evoking gear from the 40s, with a Class-A single-ended-triode design and sporting quality NOS 6SL7 drivers and 6L6GC output tubes. As the Kenzie’s bigger brother, it also offers a 2 Watt speaker output suitable for driving high efficiency or horn speakers, or a set of monitors on your workstation.
A classic transformer output design, the Mogwai has much in common with the Kenzie, but to our ear delivers a bit more impact while preserving the expansive soundstage, tone and texture. The noise floor of the amp is quite low, presenting a hiss-free inky-black background, even with fairly efficient headphones like the ETHER Flow.
Highs are smooth and airy, mids have that “ahh” factor you get from great gear, and the bass is warm and powerful while avoiding the syrupy thickness some tube gear imparts on the sound.
The Mogwai pairs beautifully with the ETHER Flow and ETHER C Flow, and is a particularly excellent pairing for jazz and classical enthusiasts. If you enjoy the natural and relaxed tone of tube gear and are looking for a stylish, well built, quiet and sweet sounding unit, you owe it to yourself to give the Kenzie a try.
P.S. It pairs very nicely with the Gungnir Multibit DAC.
